What is DBT?

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a type of cognitive-behavioral therapy designed to help individuals manage intense emotions, improve relationships, and develop coping skills. Originally developed for borderline personality disorder (BPD), it is now used for various mental health conditions like treatment-resistant depression, generalized anxiety, eating disorders, bipolar disorders addictions and PTSD – severe emotional dysregulation disorders.

How It Helps:
DBT combines individual therapy, group skills training, and phone coaching to teach four key skills:

  1. Mindfulness – Staying present and aware.
  2. Distress Tolerance – Handling crises without harmful behaviors.
  3. Emotion Regulation – Managing and changing intense emotions.
  4. Interpersonal Effectiveness – Communicating assertively while maintaining relationships.

Benefits:

  • Reduces self-harm, suicidal thoughts, and impulsive behaviors.
  • Improves emotional stability and coping strategies.
  • Enhances relationships through better communication.
  • Helps individuals accept reality while working toward positive change.

DBT is evidence-based and particularly effective for those struggling with emotional dysregulation, offering practical tools for long-term mental wellness. DBT gives you the tools to “Build a life worth living!”
